| 3 Generation Family
Business 1920’s started by present owners Grandfather. Original location was Rathcormac. 1944 Taken over by 2nd generation John Riordan. Business at that time comprised of a Grocery Shop, Bakery and Grain Store. As was the custom at the time Riordans had a mobile shop and brought their wares for sale right to the customers door step 1965 approached by Musgraves, then boasting the VG brand, to join their newly formed group. Riordans moved to McCurtin Street, Fermoy and becoming one of the VG Pioneers set up the 1st Self Service Retail Outlet in the area. Business flourished and even with 3 expansions and over doubling the original floor space more room was needed. Floor space increased from 1500sq feet to 3500sq feet. 1980 the current owner Michael Riordan fully joined the business under his father’s tutelage learning every aspect of the retail trade from the ground up. 1985 relocated to current location and the Top Hat Dance Hall became Riordans Supermarket. Floor space 8000sq feet. Moving out of the town centre would have been considered a risky move at the time and it took some time for people to realise that one could shop beyond the central core of the town. 1987 Michael took the reins, with the passing of his father. 1999 again the existing premises could not cope with the level of business and the ever changing consumer requirements and a complete revamp and extension commenced. The work began in March of 1999, was completed for the official opening by October 1999 and cost in the region of 1.2 million Irish Punts. Floor space 9500sq feet. 2002 the business grew from strength to strength since 1999 and a 60% increase in sales had been documented. It had become apparent that the premises could not adequately cope with the business demands and planning commenced to double the existing floor space. 2004 Building commenced with the extension of the store-room 2005 Work commenced on the latest extension. 2006 The store you see today was finally completed in late 2006. The wide aisled, brightly lit, modern super-market, boasting its own Instore Scratch Bakery, now has a floor space of approximately 17500sq feet. Even though we’re now bigger, our aim is to treat our customers with the same care and respect that they would have received when they visited the 1st store back in the 1920’s. |
