Galtee Honey

Galtee Honey

Cahir, Co. Tipperary

Galtee HoneyMichael, Joan and Aoife Mac Giolla Coda own and run Galtee Honey Farm which has won many prizes for its honey. Michael started it off in 1970 with 5 hives of bees and today it comprises of approximately 150 hives of bees. These hives are sited in groups called apiaries throughout the Galtee Vee Valley and stretch over the three counties of Cork, Limerick and Tipperary. This ensures that the hives of bees are collecting honey from a wide variety of flora including sycamore and horse chestnut blossom, dandelion, oilseed rape, hawthorn, blackberry blossom, clover and heather. It is all these flowers which gives their honey its variety of flavour.

The Mac Giolla Coda family are committed to promoting the native honeybees of Ireland, known as ‘Black Bees’. They breed them and believe in the importance of conserving them due to their high disease resistance and other characteristics. Michael and Aoife look after the bees, harvest the honey and breed bees, while Joan packs and labels the honey. They also teach and lecture on many aspects of beekeeping. Michael holds a Nat.Dip.Sc. in Apiculture. He is also a qualified honey judge and has judged at honey competitions both nationally and internationally.
